Cleaning without chemical sprays, especially in and around the toilet can be a challenge but I’m here to tell you it’s not impossible.
The supermarkets are full of products to clean your house with a huge array aimed at cleaning your toilet. The unfortunate problem with these is that they are not natural and have a heavy cost both during development and use. You can also look to your local health/natural shop to buy supplies which are more gentle on your senses and the environment.
To get to this recipe, I’ve tried different combinations of ingredients but not all were effective. This has been my go-to solution for a while now and I am still happy with it’s performance.
- 30 ml Water
- 40 ml Vinegar (any white vinegar)
- 2 or 3 drops essential oil (optional)
- 1 heaped teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
- 1 heaped teaspoon citric acid
Mix the vinegar, water and essential oils (if using) and pour into the toilet over any soiled areas.
Sprinkle the bicarbonate of soda in and around where you put the vinegar. Do the same with the citric acid.
You should notice the ingredients start to react with one another in the form of bubbling and/or a gassy sound. This is normal, leave it for a minute or two if you want. Simply scrub, as normal, with a toilet brush and the dirt will lift off easily. Then flush and you are done.
Essential Oils
It’s important to get your oils from a reputable source. There is great variety that you can mix and match to find the scent that you like. Here are some of my suggestions:
- Clove
- Lemon
- Lavendar
- Wild Orange
- Cinnamon
- Eucalyptus
- Rosemary
I use a drop of each of the above in around a liter of water and vinegar mixed.
